What is a chiller?

A chiller is a machine or equipment that uses either a vapor-compression, or absorption refrigeration cycle, to remove heat from a liquid. The cooled liquid can then be circulated, through a heat exchanger or another process stream. This can be used in air conditioners, refrigerators and refrigeration trucks. At Glacier Vehicles, we provide a large selection of both used and new refrigerated vans that have top of the line chillers, built into them. The vans are used for the efficient transportation of perishable goods, such as frozen foods, meat and medical supplies. We carry trusted manufacturers like Mercedes, Toyota, Nissan, Iveco, Ford, Peugeot and others that are available in the United Kingdom. We can provide you with the specific truck brand and model that you want. You can also get a van which is not a refrigerated one, and we will add a chiller, to convert it, for cargo transport.

What is a Chiller Used For?

A chiller is used in air conditioning systems, to cool and dehumidify the air stream. They are also used in industries, to cool products in a targeted and controlled way. A chiller can be used for a centralized purpose, where it serves more than one cooling need. It can also serve a decentralized purpose. A chiller can be Water-cooled, or air-cooled. Water-cooled chillers are usually used indoors, while air-cooled chillers are used for outdoor purposes.

Temperature Controlled chillers for your transportation & Logistics needs

Our vehicles which contain chillers will be a great solution to your transportation and logistics needs, if you are in the supply chain or distribution business. Goods that are sensitive and need to be transported at a specific temperature, can be delivered in our trucks.

How temperature controlled Chiller Van Units work

 Chiller vans have specific processes that help to make it an insulated area. The processes include;

Thermal insulation

A Chiller truck makes use of an insulated airtight compartment, which is used to store food and other precious cargo. Insulation is definitely essential, for the chiller to be fully functional. The insulation used in the truck is mostly of higher quality, and a lot thicker than the insulation used in a household refrigerator.

Thermal engineering

Thermal engineering is another process used in the functioning of a chiller. It has four parts which includes;

  1. Styrofoam

The job of Styrofoam in a chiller is, to reduce the amount of chilling that can escape from the vehicle. For trucks that are meant for refrigeration, the thickness of the Styrofoam can be up to 50mil. For chiller vans that are meant for freezing, the Styrofoam can have a thickness of 75mil. The density of foam (PCF) is calculated by e pounds per cubic foot.

  1. Wood boarding

The wood used in the chiller van is treated with food safe, anti-bacterial fungicides, to prevent rot.

  1. Fiberglass

Fiberglass is used in the chiller as sheeting, for the interior. It acts as a keying agent, for the GRP resin that is used.

  1. GRP resin interior

The interior of the chiller truck is finished with a wet lay roller that is similar to resin flooring. When it dries, it is 100% hygienic, and becomes a loading area that can be cleaned easily. The refrigerator trucks use a direct mechanism that powers the refrigeration compartment, with power that is generated by the engine. This powers the fridge system, refrigeration, the condenser, the compressor and evaporator.

Temperature control

This is a process that ensures that chiller functions properly, and stores at the exact temperature that is required. The vehicle draws air from outside and circulates it. There is a partition wall that can be static or movable, which protects the driver and passengers, who are on the truck.

What Components are used in your Chiller / conversions built with?

At Glacier vehicles, our chiller vehicles are built with GAH refrigeration systems. The both new and used refrigerated vans usually come with a 2 temp fan kit, from GAH. There will also be a dual compartment: Insulated Coolbox/Cargo Compartment in the chiller. The vehicle can have a freezer supporting 0 to -25 degrees, and a refrigerator supporting 0 to +5.
