HVAC
HVAC is an acronym for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. It is the technology of indoor and vehicular comfort. Refrigeration is in the same field as HVAC. They have the same concept but different operating temperature ranges, equipment, and refrigerants. Your chiller vehicle requires a standard heating and cooling system to operate efficiently.
At Glacier Vehicles, we offer installation, repair, replacement and maintenance of the HVAC systems. We supply a climate control, heating, and ventilation system to enhance the comfort of fridge van personnel. We can also advise you regarding which HVAC system best suits your vehicle and business operations.
One of our general HVAC routines is to paint all our fridge/freezer vans white. This is because light-coloured vans do not absorb as much heat as dark-coloured ones. We are constantly thinking about your comfort and optimal productivity even in the little things.
HVAC in Refrigerator Vans
One of the things we consider is the comfort of the driver and the personnel travelling in it. If the temperature in your refrigeration van is not conducive for your driver and other staff, it inadvertently affects their productivity and your cargo.
The temperature of the cargo compartment can be as low as 0⁰C to -25⁰C and as favourable as it is for the temperature-sensitive cargo, it is disagreeable with humans. Care, therefore, has to be taken to regulate the temperature of the cab so that no matter how cold it gets in the cargo department, it does not extend to the cab.
Apart from the internal temperature, the external temperature is also important. No matter how hot or ambient the atmosphere is, it should not affect the cab and cargo compartments.
Types of HVAC Systems Used in Refrigerator Vehicles
Some types of HVAC options used in our new refrigerator van conversions at Glacier Vehicles are:
Insulation
Some days, it may get too cold in the cab compartment of the temperature-controlled van. Adequate insulation of the van using high-density polymer foam, panelling, fibreglass and Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) provides enough insulation against uncomfortably frigid temperatures.
Van partitions
Part of the temperature control system is the partition wall which could be static or movable. The partition wall separates the cargo area from the driver cab so that the freezing temperature of the cargo hold does not inconvenience the driver or passenger.
At Glacier Vehicles, we install partitions which are engineered to provide a barrier between the cab and the cargo area. Cab comfort can be improved by installing van partitions for temperature control. All our van partitions are crash-tested and designed for maximum impact resistance. They maximise the cargo space while ensuring the driver’s comfort.
Thermostat installation
A thermostat is a device used in regulating the temperature of a heating and air conditioning system so that the temperature is maintained near a desired set temperature. It does this by controlling the flow of heat energy into or out of the van. It switches heating and cooling devices on and off as needed to maintain the correct temperature.
A thermostat can be installed in both the cab and the cargo compartment to ensure the right temperature is maintained. At Glacier Vehicles, the cooling compartment of our fridge vehicle comes with a thermostat that allows you to regulate cooling in the fridge compartment.
Rooftop air condition units
This is an ideal way to keep your conversion van cool. That it is a chiller van does not mean the whole van will be cool. On hot days, the cab compartment may get too hot and uncomfortable. Rooftop air condition units can efficiently generate cold air. It is ideal because chiller vehicles do not have window space for a window air conditioning unit.
Roof vent fans
They do not generate cold air like the air conditioning units but with reverse airflow, they can blow hot air out of your van quickly. Roof vent fans do not take up space since they are fitted on the roof and they are not as chunky as air conditioning units.
Other temperature control systems are:
- Fuel-operated heaters to warm the cab compartment
- Exhaust and supply fans
